Erin earned her Masters of Social Work (MSW) from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan in May of 2017. As part of her program she began to implement yoga-based interventions in residential inpatient substance use disorder (SUD) treatment settings. After a year of success in introducing introductory Iyengar yoga to communities who otherwise would not have access to it, Erin decided to focus her Master's thesis work on yoga's impact in substance use treatment settings. She designed, implemented, and researched the impact of an 8-week yoga based intervention for a residential treatment center featuring yoga philosophy discussion and how it relates to recovery, yoga postures, and meditation. Her findings supported yoga as a way to reduce stress and showed promise in the compatibility and effectiveness of yoga in clinical settings treating SUD's, depression and anxiety.
Erin is excited to partner with more organizations and customize ways in which yoga can be introduced to clients through individual and group sessions. Iyengar yoga is incredibly versatile and is well-suited for the needs of individuals who have a history of trauma and mental health concerns, as well as those struggling with chronic pain and other physical health co-morbidity.. Additionally, clients in SUD treatment settings have found great value in relating the eight-fold path of yoga to their own experience in 12-Step programs. "After the yoga class, I'm still able to practice yoga on my own, so yeah, it did have a big impact on me, whereas before, I never thought I would be doing yoga."
" It gave me hope and motivation."
"I liked yoga because it helped my body. Doing the poses really helped my lower back."
"Yoga helped me a lot as far as keeping my cool and learning how to think before you react out of anger."
"It relaxed me and it opened me up. It gave me a sense of freedom."
