Erin Shawgo has been studying yoga since 2004 and Iyengar Yoga since 2012. Yoga has become an integrated practice in her daily life, offering her a tool for finding equanimity and working on constant self-examination and growth. Erin began teaching Iyengar Yoga in 2013 and holds an Intermediate Junior I certification with the Iyengar Yoga National Association of the United States (IYNAUS). Her teaching style is compassionate and creative, with a focus on making Iyengar yoga accessible to individuals of all identities and experiences. She believes in the power of yoga to heal and connect individuals and communities and is excited to share the gift of yoga with the Detroit community. Erin also holds her Masters of Social Work with a focus on psychodynamic therapy. Her yoga and therapy practice greatly inform one another and enrich her capacity as both a teacher and a therapist. |
Erin offers regular Iyengar yoga classes at her home studio, Iyengar Yoga Detroit in Hamtramck, Michigan. In addition to studio classes, Erin has held classes in various community settings, including the Hamtramck Public Schools after school program, and in clinical mental health settings. She has designed and taught an 8-week Iyengar Yoga intervention specifically for use in inpatient substance use disorder settings and found that during the 90-minute session, including philosophy discussion, yoga postures, and meditation, clients experienced a significant reduction in stress levels. Erin holds her Limited License Master of Social Work (LLMSW) with the State of Michigan and seeks supervision from a Licensed Social Worker when she holds classes in clinical settings. She attends class and seeks consultation with her yoga mentors Gwi-Seok Hong and Laurie Blakeney in relation to her role as a yoga teacher. If your community group, non-profit organization, business, or mental health service provider is interested in offering yoga onsite or creating a class at a studio specific to your group's needs, please contact Erin here.
